Systemic factors including endogenous and exogenous hormones, dietary intake of calcium and Vitamin D, smoking, and alcohol consumption influence bone health. Local or site specific factors also influence bone health. These local factors are primarily the gravitational and muscular forces incurred during physical activity. There are, of course, numerous interactions among systemic factors, local factors, and genetic factors that influence bone health and ultimately osteoporotic fracture risk. |
