Epigraphy and Epigraphic Research – Issues, Methods, Challenges and Perspectives

 The workshop aims at defining the terms and the basic concepts in the science of engravings, in addition to the history of the science of archaeological engravings and its origin and development.

 
The course has three main aims:
1- Documentation and description of inscriptions, the physical appearance of inscribed monuments. A range of drawing techniques and photographic methods, both traditional and digital, will be introduced, while the advantages and disadvantages of every technique will be outlined.
2- Reading, translating, commenting and indexing the texts offer a key to access the inscriptions’ content. The use of references and digital tools as well as styles and strategies of philological work will be amplified, compared and discussed.
3- Analyzing and interpreting inscriptions in order to reveal the historical, social and cultural information encoded in them. A range of scholarly frameworks (like chronology, prosopography, landscape archaeology ) and their methods will be explained.
 
The participants will have practical exercises on a number of archaeological inscriptions.
