This paper examines the health status of residents in a major urban centre in Kenya and reviews the effects of selected social determinants on local health. The use of a participatory method proved to be a useful approach, benefit other centres in their analysis of social determinants of health.

The policy aspiration of increasing spending on PHC was attained but key aspects that would facilitate its realization were not addressed. At any level of funding for the health sector, there is need to work out an optimal balance in investment between hospitals and health centers.
