The goal of these studies has been to investigate the association of numerous
factors (including medical conditions, demographic characteristics, social and
psychological factors, medication use, and health behaviors) with important
outcomes in aging populations, including death, disability, nursing home
admission, and the onset of new chronic conditions. The EPESE database
represents one of the largest resources of epidemiologic data on representative,
community-dwelling populations of older persons, and remains an important
resource for answering a wide range of questions on older populations. Links to
Medicare records were successfully completed and high quality data are now
available through 1992. A number of analyses are underway that use these linked
records to document hospitalization for specific events and costs of
hospitalization.
