In a series of case-control studies in coastal areas of Georgia, northern Florida and Virginia, we found significantly increased risks associated with work in shipyards, notably during World War II when exposures to asbestos were very high. Except in Virginia, most of the shipyards closed soon after the end of the war, but the temporary exposures to asbestos were sufficient to sustain an epidemic of lung cancer, especially among those workers who also smoked. |
