We were also struck by the patterns for cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx among women which showed clusters of elevated mortality in rural southern areas. In a case-control study in North Carolina, we found substantially elevated risks that were associated with the long-standing practice of snuff dipping, rising to 50-fold for tumors of the gum and buccal mucosa, which are the tissues in direct contact with the smokeless tobacco. |
