There is a whole spectrum of effects. A lot of children who
don't have the full-blown syndrome are as severely affected in many ways. Here we took any
kid who had a head circumference that was less than 10% of the growth parameter, and any
one of the facial anomalies. We looked at those children and compared them to the other
subjects and what's remarkable is that the I.Q. score on the non-FAS kids was 10 points
lower, the math subtest on the WRAT achievement test was 15 points lower, the spelling
test was 10 points lower, and the reading subtest was about 4 or 5 points lower. |
