The development of paediatrics as a medical specialty is a fairly recent event,
it has existed for only about 200 years. During the first half of XIXth century
the Paris medical school was preeminent throughout all Europe. Students and
doctors from all over the world flocked to Paris to attend the revolutionary
school . Here was taught a new medicine based on concepts and techniques unknown
to the ancients - on physical examination by hand and ear, on pathological
anatomy, on statistics, and the concept of the lesion. The best explanation for
the advance of specialism in Paris seems to have been the wave of localism and
solidism against the ancient humoral theory. |
