Abstract:
A conference on food and security in a world of HIV & AIDS was organized in Pretoria by the Regional AIDS Initiative of Southern Africa (RAISA) of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) between 2-4 November 2006. The conference provided a platform for discussing improved linkages between food security analysis and HIV & AIDS work in southern Africa. It was recommended to: strengthen the capacity of families; mobilize, support and advocate for community initiatives; ensure access to essential services for vulnerable people; aim to keep mothers alive; ensure that governments protect the most vulnerable; teach about food in schools; and advocate for food security and fair trade in international debates and forums. From a rights perspective it is important to respond with policies and programmes which address labour scarcity; promote agricultural diversity; mainstream HIV & AIDS in agricultural-extension programmes; extend micro-finance schemes; advocate for food rights; and to hold governments accountable. It was also recommended that programmes on food, nutrition, health, the environment, livelihoods and education should integrate with HIV & AIDS programmes for sustainability, effective community empowerment, and to maximize the use of limited resources.
