Abstract:
Emmanuel Sherwin spent his childhood in out-of-home care in Ireland as of the age of 4: first in kinship foster care, then in residential care. Now 24, he is Youth Chairperson for the International Foster Care Organisation (IFCO) and a vocal advocate for change in attitudes and practice regarding alternative care solutions. As Emmanuel would say, “if you’re doing market research, you don’t survey the producers, you talk to the consumers.” So for the “In Practice” section of this ECM, rather than interview the head of an out-of-home care programme, we chose to put our questions to Emmanuel.
