Abstract:
There has been a lot of talk recently about second generation biofuels, but confusion persists as to what they are, and how their deployment will change the current state of affairs with first generation biofuels. Both ENDS prepared this fact-sheet with other Dutch NGOs in order to shed some light on these issues. Second generation biofuels are touted by many as a panacea to the adverse effects of the first generation. In its original Biofuel Directive, the EU had also named the viability of second generation biofuels as a precondition to its mandatory biofuel blending target of 10% by 2020. However, second generation biofuels are by most estimates not likely to be viable by that date. Moreover, they bring with them a host of new concerns.
