Abstract:
The energy and climate policy in the EU and in other states is to bring the use of fossil fuels to a standstill. Part of this policy is energy efficiency and increase of renewable energies resources. To reduce the effects of climate change and establish a common energy policy, the European Union has passed specific legislation and set out certain mandatory and non-mandatory targets especially to regulate electricity produced by renewable energy sources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency by 2020. Different mechanisms of support for the promotion of renewables are currently in place at national level in each EU member state. The different targets set out by the EU and the steps taken by the member states towards a greener Europe are not isolated moves. Against the background of global climate change certain states in the US as well as Israel have set the political goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2015. This article discusses these energy and climate policies.
