Abstract:
This publication reports on the results of the International Symposium on the Impact of Mega Sports Events on Development Goals which was held from 5 to 7 March 2008 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The main objective of the conference was to unlock the potential of the 2010 FIFA World Cup ™ to support social and economic development in South Africa and the revival of the wider African continent. The conference focussed on three main questions: 1) What will the socio-economic impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ be and will the poor benefit?, 2) Will the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ strengthen local community sport and more specifically football structures?, and 3) Is 2010 FIFA World Cup™ a vehicle for societal change in the area of health?
