Abstract:
This publication is a turning point for NCDO (the National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development); a turning point that sees the emphasis shift from garnering broad public support for development cooperation to defining the connection between international developments and – global – citizenship. But what exactly is global citizenship? ‘Global’ clearly means that something extends beyond the borders of our nation state, while ‘citizenship’ concerns mutual relations and expectations
between an individual citizen and the society in which he/she lives.
This publication explores the concept of global citizenship by drawing on the most relevant, mainly scientific, literature. This exploration will in the coming years be the basis for NCDO’s programmes in the area of research, staff training, and knowledge sharing.
