Abstract:
This pre-publication offers an introduction to the history of SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, which is currently celebrating its fortieth anniversary. For the past forty years, development cooperation has been an integral part of Dutch foreign and domestic policy, and SNV has become one of the most important Dutch development organizations, playing a leading role in development policy-making in the Netherlands. The first Dutch development money, that was earmarked as such, was spent in 1949, whereas SNV was founded in 1965. It the present overview, the following phases are distinguished: (1) The Merchant and the Preacher (1949-1962); (2) Bricks and Mortar (1963-1972); (3) Self-Reliance (1973-1984); (4) Expertise Expected (1985-1994); and (5) Building Capacity (1995-2005).
