Abstract:
Tuberculosis (TB) disease morbidity and mortality is pervasive across the Sub Saharan Africa region. Efficient laboratory services are pivotal at all stages of the tuberculosis care cascade, from diagnosis and drug resistance testing to monitoring of treatment response. Laboratories implementing quality management systems (QMS) have improved test quality and general quality of services which in turn has a good impact on patient care. However, National TB Reference Laboratories (NTRLs) in most Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) countries are not accredited and face various challenges in QMS implementation. In line with the End TB strategy and to have better health for the people, it is therefore imperative that factors influencing QMS implementation in these laboratories be explored, and strategies be proposed to overcome them with urgency.
