Abstract:
Nigeria is one of many sub-Saharan African countries experiencing a severe shortage of skilled health workers in their right number, mix and distribution. Attrition rates are highest at the primary care level despite the adequate production of nurses and midwives who constitute the bulk of the health workforce at the PHC level. This study seeks to explore the gender norms and experiences that could be influencing the retention of health workers at the PHC level.
