Abstract:
In Uganda, community participation in primary health care (PHC) is arranged through Health Unit Management Committees (HUMCs) at Health Centre II-IV. Despite this, there seems to be limited community participation in PHC planning and decision-making processes in Uganda. This study explored the role of HUMCs at Health Centre II-IV in promoting community participation in PHC delivery in Uganda, to suggest recommendations to strengthen community participation in PHC delivery through HUMCs.HUMCs enable community participation in health decision-making, assist facilities with operational tasks and aid patients with health and social needs. They create platforms for community members to contribute to planning, designing, and delivering health services. However, there is a poor selection of representatives and a lack of training. In addition, there is weak coordination between HUMCs, facilities, district and village health teams; and inadequate linkages between HUMCs and people they are supposed to represent.
