HONORING THE PAST… SUSTAINING THE FUTURE
Mission and main objectives:Alex Med is concerned with researching, documenting and managing the tangible and intangible heritage of Alexandria, and relating it to the sustainable development of the city and the culture of the Mediterranean.
Research: The acquisition of resources and documentation on the past and the present are an important activity in the Center which has a number of databases covering many aspects of the city's heritage. These databases, including an extensive collection of photographs and oral histories, are available for research purposes in fields such as ethnography, sociology, architecture and the arts.
Dialogue: Tolerance and dialogue are promoted through a variety of activities including international conferences, exhibitions, exchange programs and specialized publications.
Dissemination: Knowledge on Alexandria and the Mediterranean is disseminated through various means such as publications, websites, exhibitions and public conferences given by key speakers.
Heritage: Heritage management, urban planning and cultural tourism are key areas of activity. Heritage projects include surveys on endangered buildings and projects to safeguard the city's Ottoman and Greco-Roman heritage in particular.
Development: Likewise, Alex-Med is deeply involved in promoting the city's development working with stakeholders such as the Governorate of Alexandria, and members of civil society.
Publications: Alex-Med's books, including monographs and the quarterly Newsletter, CDs, maps and websites, cover a wide range of subjects contributing to the Center's goals.
Cooperation: Alex-Med works with many partners, both locally and in the international arena. Exchange of skills and technology through collaborative projects have helped to making it a center for dialogue and excellence.
The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) is a multidisciplinary Research Center established by Royal Decree on 9 October 1958. Its purpose is the organization, finance and support of high-level research projects in the humanities and the natural sciences.
The Humanities Institutes cover a wide spectrum of study and research fields in Greek history and culture, contributing substantially and critically to the knowledge and promotion of Greek identity.
The Natural Sciences Institutes perform basic and applied research in leading edge areas of science such as health, pharmaceuticals, environment, biotechnology and new materials. They develop innovative methods for solving complex problems facing Greek industry and they provide specialized services and know-how both to the public and private sector.
The NHRF is governed by the Board of Directors and the Central Administration under the Director/Chairman of the Board.
Achievements of the NHRF: The NHRF in 40 years of operation has demonstrated substantial research output harmoniously covering both the humanities and the natural sciences spectrum. Additionally it has developed significant scientific and technological services and products for the public and private sectors. Its historical course has shown that it is a dynamic institution, which meets the modern challenges of research and technology.
Collaboration Networks: The future course of the NHRF is largely based on its active participation in collaboration networks of the European Union and the Ministry of Development (3rd EU Initiative). In parallel, as a fundamental strategic objective, the NHRF projects its strong presence in the South-Eastern area of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean and also undertakes activities aiming at the reinforcement of research, technological and cultural collaboration with the regional countries (NETRIMED). Additionally, the NHRF participates in the National Network of Mobility Centers in collaboration with the Center for Research and Technology - Hellas (CERTH).
The University of Alicante was created in October 1979. The University of Alicante presents a very high potential regarding the socio-economic development; in fact it is the fourth province of Spain in GBP (Gross National Product). About fifty degrees, more than sixty University Departments and research units and groups in Social and Legal Sciences, Experimental Sciences, Technological Sciences, Human Sciences, Education and Health Sciences, five Research University Centers (Water, Environment, Geographical Analysis, International Economy) cover the expectations of more than 30.000 students and develop one of the country's most reputable research activity.
The University owns an Industrial Experimentation Area and Research Services.
Besides the determined bet for innovation and technology, the University of Alicante has a solid commitment with everything related to culture and patrimony: one of the best European university museums, La Alcudia Archeological site, the best Renaissance Valencian building, the university head office in Orihuela for two centuries (1610-1808): the Historic University of Orihuela, the medieval count's Palace in Cocentaina, the Palace-like Houses in Benissa , etc. which provides an increasing prestige both in the national and international spheres.
