American forces, numbering nearly 675 men, marshaled on the plains of Abraham to storm Quebec City.  Besides being met by unexpectedly stout opposition, Arnold's troops also fell victim to an outbreak of smallpox and were forced to retreat southward across Canada, back into the present United States.
