Some good news is that
Gonorrhea, one of these two major players, has actually been declining in the U.S. The bad
news is that Chlamydia has been increasing. These data are actually fairly hard to
interpret. I’ll just give you an epidemiologic caveat, which is that these were national
data reported to the CDC, and what was happening during this perio of the 1980s and early
1990s was that actually states were coming online with sate by state reporting, so a lot
of this is actually a reporting bias. But if you look at recent statistics chlamydial
prevalence, you’ll find that it is remarkably prevalent in young groups of women,
depending on the population that we’re talking about, anywhere between 7 and 15 % of
selected groups of reproductive age women will be carrying Chlamydia at any given point or
time. So we’re talking about a really common disease. |
