Abstract:
In both developed and developing countries, extreme poverty often results in parents becoming separated from their children. Yet two research studies have highlighted the importance of family and community ties to those living in persistent poverty all over the world. Both parents and children expressed a deep desire that actions taken on behalf of the children should build on these ties. The issues and examples presented [in the article] are drawn from these studies.
