Biography:

Mohamed Sawan is a Distinguished Research Professor in the Engineering Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin and Associate Director of the Fusion Technology Institute. He graduated in 1967 from the Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of Alexandria. He received his Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973. He taught at the Nuclear Engineering Department of the University of Alexandria and supervised three Ph.D. and 10 M.S. theses in the period 1974-1980. Since 1980 he has been working at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where his research activities aimed at development of fusion technology as an inexhaustible source of environmentally clean energy. He played a major role in the design and analysis for many conceptual fusion power plants. Currently, he is leading the nuclear analysis in support for the design of the first International Fusion Test Reactor (ITER) whose construction started in France in 2011. He is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and received several awards recognizing his contribution to research. These awards include the University of Wisconsin award for Excellence in Research in 1994 and the US Department of Energy award for outstanding leadership and performance in ITER design in 1998. He published 380 papers and reports in Nuclear Engineering subjects and served as guest editor and reviewer for several prestigious fusion research journals.
