TriNex 2nd Ph.D. Winter School

The Ph.D. Winter School is focused on sharing a comprehensive understanding of the interrelation existing among WEF Nexus (Water, Energy, and Food), with the aim at educating researchers towards new thinking over sustainable solutions. The project partners are all universities with a strong background in both research and the relevant fields making each contribution vital to the progression of TriNex project. Four of the universities are in Europe, the other four are in Egypt. While the Egyptian universities will handle the project's immediate environment, the European institutes shall provide their invaluable expertise and experience, especially in terms of training the researchers. The partners are as follows:
- Politecnico di Milano (Italy)
- RWTH Aachen University (Germany)
- Alexandria University (Egypt)
- Alexandria University (Egypt)
- Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development (Egypt)
- The American University in Cairo (Egypt)
- Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt)
- The general objective of the TriNex project is to make WEF Nexus the next research, education and innovation frontier for sustainable resource management and development within the framework of green economy in Egypt. The project aims at improving the role of universities in the Egyptian society by developing a national strategy and a university platform to promote the WEF-Nexus and the related synergy between research, education and innovation (Knowledge-Triangle).

Call for Nominations: Workshop on Policy and Diplomacy for Scientists: Introduction to Responsible Research Practices in Chemical and Biochemical Sciences

The Secretariat of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), The Netherlands, would like to invite nominations from the National Authority and Permanent Representation of Member States to the OPCW to attend this workshop. Kindly submit the nomination form to the OPCW Secretariat via email (icb@opcw.org).
OPCW will organise, in collaboration with the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the second edition of a workshop on "Policy and Diplomacy for Scientists: Introduction to Responsible Research Practices in Chemical and Biochemical Sciences". The workshop will be held at TWAS headquarters in Trieste, Italy, from 12 to 15 September 2017.
The objective of the workshop is to raise awareness among young scientists on the policy and diplomacy aspects that are related to the use of chemicals in various scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and other related fields.
Admission requirements: (Egypt is not included)
1) Have a PhD in natural sciences or related to engineering, from a recognized university or institution.
2) Be citizens of OPCW Member States.
3) Have been working in the field of applied chemical or biochemical or related sciences (research, academia, or industry) for at least five years.
4) Are young scientists at the beginning of their scientific career.
The workshop will be conducted in English. Participants must therefore have a strong command of both written and spoken English.

The German Science Day 17 July 2017 - for outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral candidates: Call for Application

On 17 July, the DAAD with its new regional initiative COSIMENA will organize the German Science Day for the sixth time. This event reflects a unique opportunity for doctoral and postdoctoral candidates to meet representatives of various German universities including the Technische Universität Berlin, the Philipps Universität Marburg, the Technical University of Munich and the Freie Universität Berlin. Moreover, the German Science Day provides insights into scholarships, programmes, application procedures and financing models as well as individual counselling sessions to establish a first-contact with German Professors.

Falling Walls Lab Egypt 2017: Call For Applications

The DAAD Cairo Office is proudly announcing the call for applications for the 4th edition of the Falling Walls Lab Egypt.
Outstanding young academics, entrepreneurs and specialists from all disciplines will get the chance to share their groundbreaking idea by presenting it in three minutes on stage. The winner is qualified and awarded a ticket for the international Falling Walls Lab in Berlin and the annual Falling Walls Conference on 9 November 2017.

TWAS─Samira Omar Innovation for Sustainability Prize

This new annual prize, named after the TWAS Fellow Samira Omar, will be awarded to a female scientist living and working in a Least Developing Country (LDC) for scientific achievements in conservation and management of natural resources.
The Prize carries a cash award of USD 4,000.

TWAS─Atta-ur-Rahman Prize in Chemistry

This annual award is given to young chemists, under the age of 40, national of a developing country, who have been living and working in a Scientifically and Technologically (ST)-lagging country for a minimum of two years immediately prior to their application.
All fields of Chemistry are eligible.
The Prize is worth USD 5,000.

TWAS Research and Advanced Training Fellowship: 2017 Call for Applications

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, www.twas.org, is now accepting applications for the TWAS Research and Advanced Training Fellowship programme.
The fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centres of excellence in various developing countries.
Eligible fields include one or more of the following: agricultural and biological sciences, medical and health sciences, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, space and earth sciences, mathematics and physics.

Call for Applications: Grants to Develop Components of a Curriculum on Responsible Science for Egypt

Number of grants to be awarded: up to 7
Available funding per grant: up to $7,000
Funds are available to promote the development of components for a curriculum on responsible science for use with undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research scientists and engineers in the life and physical sciences in Egypt. The framework for this curriculum will be based on the Egyptian Educational Institutes on Responsible Science and the subsequent leadership institute held in Egypt in 2015 and 2016 (see
http://rcr.asu.edu.eg and
http://www.nas-sites.org/responsiblescience/). These Institutes were organized by The U.S. National Academy of Sciences, in partnership with Ain Shams University, and in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Cairo University, Damanhour University and Mansoura University. The Institutes use principles of active learning and engagement pedagogies to empower faculty and researchers to help their students and peers explore issues of responsible science and related practices.
Successful proposals will:
1) demonstrate
how content and instructional methods will be integrated and
2) provide a clear
plan for later assessing the outcomes of the proposed work following the development of the proposed curricular component.
Grants are available only to Egyptian nationals affiliated with Egyptian universities, scientific or engineering institutions or research centers.

TWAS 2017 Prizes and the 2017 TWAS-Siwei Cheng Prize in Economic Sciences

TWAS is seeking nominations for the TWAS 2017 Prizes and the 2017 TWAS-Siwei Cheng Prize in Economic Sciences
TWAS 2017 Prizes will be awarded to individual scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years immediately prior to their nomination, in recognition of an outstanding contribution to knowledge or an outstanding contribution to the application of science and technology to sustainable development, in the following eight fields of science: Agricultural Sciences; Biology; Chemistry; Earth, Astronomy and Space Sciences; Engineering Sciences; Mathematics; Medical Sciences, Physics and Social Sciences (excluding economic sciences).
The newly established TWAS-Siwei Cheng Prize in Economic Sciences will be awarded to an individual scientist for outstanding contribution in both understanding and addressing economic sciences.
In either cases nominations can only be submitted electronically.
