Biography:
Dr Pruna holds an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in biology and is currently Senior Researcher at the
National Museum of History of Science in Havana, Cuba. He is also a full professor at the
Faculty of History and Philosophy of Havana University and, since 1995, a Research
Associate of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. in Washington D.C., U.S.A. His first articles
on Darwinism (which include a commented version of The Orgien of Species) were published
in the 1960s. In 1982, he organized the commemoration of the centennial of Darwins death
(the proceedings of this meeting were published in a volume, under the title Por Darwin, in
1985). He edited the first full translation into Spanish of Charles Darwins Autobiography,
published in Cuba in 1986 and in Spain in 1987. He has published several articles and a book
(1989) on the reception of Darwinism in Cuba. An article of his on Darwinism in Cuba, was
included in the Dictionnaire du Darwinisme et de lEvolution, published in France, in 1996. He
has lectured on Darwinism and other matters related to the history of science in academic
institutions of Latin America, the United States and Europe. He is member of the International
Society of History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Biology, of the Iberoamerican network on
the reception of Darwinism, of the History of Science Society (U.S.A.) and of the editorial
councils of the journals Asclepio (Spain) and History of Medicine Bulletin (Mexico).
