(DAAD) Funding Programme for Special Master Courses in Germany

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a special Funding Programmes for selected, development-related Master Courses in Germany.
Programme objectives:
This programme is designed to qualify future
leaders and change agents. It is for young
professionals with an academic background in
Politics, Law, Economics and Administration as
well as a range of other disciplines such as the
Natural and Engineering Sciences.
The scholarships are for two-year Master
courses (in some cases shorter) at a range of
carefully selected study programs at prestigious
German institutions of Higher Education. The
majority of these courses are taught in English.
The scholarship holders will be offered special
tutoring at their host institutions.

The Commission, through its Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology implements a strategic science and technology development programme, aimed at contributing to the wellbeing and improved quality of life for the African citizens.

The 2011 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is seeking nominations for the 2011 Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize.
The Prize, sponsored by Trieste-based ILLYCAFFE, has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by scientists living and working in the developing countries.
In 2011 the prize will be given for outstanding achievements in Materials Science.
The prize carries a US$100,000 monetary award and medal.
The deadline for receiving nominations has been extended to 31 July 2011.

Higher Education Funding Opportunities in the Arab Region

The BA produced the "Higher Education Funding Opportunities in the Arab Region "online Directory.
This Directory is the outcome of a research project conducted by a group of young researchers in the Resource Development Department.
The project was generously supported by the Ford Foundation Regional Office in Cairo.
The purpose of the Directory is to help students and higher education institutes to learn about existing local and regional donors supporting higher education in 12 Arab countries.
The Directory also aims to provide an access point to donors allowing them to disseminate information about their activities, observe other donors? activities, and most importantly to pave the way for the creation of fruitful partnerships between them.

The TWAS-AAS-Microsoft Award for Young Scientists

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is currently seeking nominations of young scientists in Africa whose research in computer science promises to have a positive impact in the developing world.
Each year, three winners are selected from different countries on the continent. Each recipient receives a Euro 7,000 cash award generously contributed by Microsoft Research, of which EUR 2,000 may be spent at the recipient?s discretion and EUR 5,000 shall be earmarked for further research.
Nominees can be any nationality, but must have been resident and working in Africa for at least the two years immediately prior to their nomination.
Nominees must also have received their most recent degree (Master's or PhD) within the previous ten years. Self-nomination or nomination by selection committee members is not accepted. Nominations of young women computer scientists are particularly encouraged.

"Chemistry for Sustainable Development in the Arab World"
In celebration of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011), TWAS-ARO YAS prize will be with the theme being: "Chemistry for Sustainable Development in the Arab World"
Chemistry can, and should be part of solutions to many societal problems in the Arab World. In a world where headlines daily proclaim the global challenges in providing sustainable food and energy, protecting the environment, improving health care, and providing education for future generations.
The prize will be awarded to a young Arab scientist who has significant contributions in the field of chemistry to solve current problems in the Arab region. The prize holds a financial contribution of
US$ 3,000
and will be announced by December 2011.
Application criteria
The nominee should be:
1. An Arab country native.
2. Residing and working in an Arab country.
3. Holds a PhD.
4. Has remarkable contribution in his/her field.
5. Less than 40 years by 1 January 2011.

UNU-IAS accepting applications for the Master of Science in Environmental Governance, Specialization in Biodiversity
UNU-IAS welcomes interested applicants for its new postgraduate programme, which will be held at the UNU-IAS facilities in Yokohama, Japan starting in September 2011.
Full-time students will receive an MSc from the United Nations University in 18 to 24 months.
The programme will be offered in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), which will provide support through curriculum guidance, course materials and access to its experts.

TWAS-ARO Young Affiliates for the period
2011-2015

Each year, the five TWAS Regional Offices each select up to five scientists to be 'TWAS Young Affiliates' for a period of five years.
During their tenure, Affiliates are invited to participate in TWAS general meetings and conferences.
This program, which began in 2007, seeks to identify the best young scientists in each region of the developing world and provide them with opportunities to network with one another, with TWAS Fellows, and to attend international conferences and other events for young scientists.
The appointments are made for a period of five years (covering five TWAS General Meetings).
Please find below TWAS Young affiliates eligibility criteria:
1. Less than 40 years old by January 2011.
2. Native of a developing country form the Arab Region.
3. Has at least 10 International publications in peer-reviewed journals.
4. Living and working in a developing country for at least the past three years.
5. Nomination should be only signed and send through TWAS-ARO members.
TWAS Young Affiliates :
- will be invited to attend all TWAS General Meetings and General Conferences;
- are entitled to attend TWAS General Meetings as observers, i.e. they will be
permitted to participate in the discussions, but will not have any voting rights;
- will be invited to attend regional meetings of TWAS Fellows organized by the Regional Offices;
- will be invited to participate in the activities of TWAS national chapters in their
home countries (if such a chapter is active);
- will receive copies of TWAS publications such as the TWAS Newsletter, Year
Book, Annual Report etc.;
- will have their biodata published in an annual Young Affiliates Year Book, to be
made available at each TWAS General Meeting;
- are eligible for TWAS Prizes (unlike full TWAS members);
- are encouraged to provide feedback to TWAS on how the Academy can respond
to the needs of young scientists in developing countries;
- are encouraged to provide information about TWAS programs to their
students and colleagues;
- are encouraged to seek out and nominate excellent scientists from developing
countries, especially science- and technology-lagging countries, for TWAS awards;
- are encouraged to seek out excellent scientists from science- and technology lagging countries and recommend their nomination for TWAS membership (via a full member of the Academy).

TWAS Fellowships: 2011 Call for Applications Postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholar and advanced research fellowships available to scientists from developing countries
TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, www.twas.org, is now accepting applications for its postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholars and advanced research fellowship programs.
The fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centers of excellence in various countries in the South, including Brazil, China, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan and Thailand.
Eligible fields include: agricultural and biological sciences, medical and health sciences, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, space and earth sciences, mathematics and physics.
