2011 TWAS Arab Regional Office Prize

This year the subject area is "The Development of Scientific Educational Material"

The TWAS Regional Prizes this year will be awarded in recognition of significant and innovative contributions to scientific educational material, especially the development of "creative programs aiming at stimulating science education in school children", that have helped to advance the quality of science education in the Region.

The winners from TWAS five regional offices will be announced together at TWAS's 22nd General Meeting next November.

Eligibility

Candidates for a TWAS-ARO Prize must be scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years. They must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Scientific research achievement of outstanding significance for the development of scientific thought.

  • Outstanding contribution to the application of Science and Technology to industry or to human well-being in a developing country.


  • The nominations will only be accepted and valid from :

    1- Members of TWAS-ARO www.bibalex.org/twasaro/members/list.htm

    2- Science Academies, National Research Councils, Universities, Scientific Institutions from the Arab Region, (a signed, stamped official nomination letter should be sent along with the nomination form, CV and list of publications to both the address and emails shown below)

    Nominations
    • TWAS is inviting nominations from all its members as well as science academies, national research councils, universities and scientific institutions in developing and developed countries.

    • Nominations must be made on the nomination form and clearly state the contribution the candidate has made to the development of the particular field of science for which the prize would be awarded.

    • The nominee's CV and her/his complete list of publications are also required.

    • Nominations of women scientists are particularly encouraged.

    • Nominations for the 2011 prize must be submitted to the address shown below by 31 March 2011. Nominations arriving later will be considered in the following year.

    • The re-nomination of a previously declined candidate shall be accepted only if it bears substantially new elements for judgment.

    Selection of the awardees is made on scientific merit and on the recommendations of the selection committees composed of TWAS members

Young Leaders Visitors Program

Are you a young opinion-maker with a vision? Do you want to make a change? Apply to a leadership program unlike any other-become part of an exclusive network of young leaders through the Young Leaders Visitors Program.

The Swedish Institute Young Leaders Visitors Program (YLVP) is an intercultural leadership program focused on social media as a tool for positive change. The program invites young opinion-makers from Sweden and selected countries in the MENA region (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza and Yemen) who are actively working for social change in their respective contexts. YLVP is designed to give participants innovative tools to shape public opinion in cutting-edge media while strengthening their intercultural leadership skills. The first phase of the program will take place in Sweden during two weeks in May. There will be two follow-ups, one in the MENA region and one in Sweden.

Who can apply?

Opinion-makers between 20 and 35 years old from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen or Sweden who are engaged in media, culture, society, business or politics and are actively working for social change within their own context, using media as a tool for shaping public opinion.

BioVision-Lilly Award in conjunction with TWAS

The BioVision Lilly Award, in conjunction with TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, will honour outstanding scientific achievements made by individual young scientists from developing countries.

The prize will reward three young scientists living and working in a developing country, who have a track record of excellent research in infectious diseases, with an emphasis on tuberculosis preferred, and promise to have a positive impact in the developing world.

Candidates should be nationals of a developing country, under 40 years of age and hold at least a PhD degree with an outstanding academic background.

Three winners will be selected and invited to attend BioVision 7th World Life Sciences Forum (Lyon, France, 27-29 March 2011)

REGIONAL FELLOWSHIPS

The L'Oreal and UNESCO are offering 10 Fellowships worth up to $20,000 each, will be awarded to Young women students in sciences applying from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen

  • The 10 annual fellowships are awarded to women scientists in Arab countries, to realize important scientific research in life sciences, applied sciences and physical sciences, the research is to be conducted in Arab region.

  • Each fellowship is worth $ 20 000 to be paid directly by L'Oreal Foundation, and to used for research in Arab countries.

  • The Fellowships will be attributed to women scientists having obtained a Masters degree.

  • The selected beneficiaries will be awarded their Fellowships at a public ceremony.

or mathematics and can make a three-minute talk on a scientific topic in front of a live audience and a panel of judges, you could be one of the winners of our FameLab Competition for science communicators!

How to apply?

If you are selected, you can turn up at one of the qualifying rounds in Cairo, Alexandria or Assiut and present any scientific topic to our panel of expert judges. Impress them with your knowledge of science, clarity and charisma and you could be selected to compete in the final!

BP Cambridge Master's Degree Scholarships for Egypt

In collaboration with BP Egypt, the Cambridge Overseas Trust offers a number of scholarships annually to enable graduates of outstanding academic merit to pursue courses of study in subjects to be considered on their merits at the University of Cambridge.

The scholarships are open to citizens of Egypt who already have, or expect to obtain before October 2011, a first class or, exceptionally, a high second class honours degree or its equivalent from a recognised university.

ONE-YEAR POSTGRADUATE STUDY Scholarships are offered for graduates to pursue a one-year postgraduate course of study. The scholarships, tenable for one year, will normally cover the University Composition Fee at the overseas rate, approved College fees, a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student (no dependants' allowances will be paid) and a contribution towards a round-trip airfare.

Field of Study :
Preference will be given to candidates seeking master's degrees in petroleum related studies. However, business, economics and development studies will also be considered.

Other Conditions :
- Successful candidates must sign, before their departure to Cambridge, an enrollment agreement with BP Egypt whereby they will agree to return back, domicile and work in Egypt after their graduation from the University of Cambridge for double the period they studied at the University of Cambridge.
- BP holds the right to apply exceptions to the above conditions as the company sees appropriate.

2010 Global Development Awards and Medals Competition

The Global Development Awards and Medals Competition is an innovative award scheme launched by the Global Development Network (GDN), with generous support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan and other donors.

Since its inception in 2000, GDN has awarded roughly US$ 2 million in research and travel grants to finalists and winners. Winners are chosen by an eminent jury at GDN's Annual Global Development Conference, with an audience of over 500 practitioners in the field of development to whom the finalists present. This year, the 12th Annual Global Development Conference will be held in BOGOTA, Colombia in January 2011.

Competition Categories:

  1. Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development - This award is for applicants submitting research proposals that are seeking to explore any of the three research themes (details below) in an original, innovative way.


  2. Prizes: First Prize: US $30,000; Second Prize: US $5,000

The seven positions for the PhD School in Statistics are covered by scholarships of euros 13.638,47 per year for a total of 3 years. In detail, 6 positions are supported by scholarship from the University of Padova; 1 position is supported by scholarship from Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo on the subject "Innovation diffusion processes: diachronic competition, interpersonal communication, and networks" (supervisor Prof. Renato Guseo)

Two more positions are available without scholarship, for students who would like to attend the School and have funding from other sources.

Admission to the PhD School in Statistics will be decided on the basis of qualifications only and does not require an entry examination.

AU Continental Scientific Award Competition

The Commission of the African Union is committed to support the use and development of science in Africa and has initiated with its key development partners The African Union Scientific Award Programme.

The objective of this programme is to award Cash Prizes and Recognition Certificates to excelling African researchers for their achievements in Earth and Life Sciences, and Basic, Science, Technology and Innovation sectors.

African Union Scientific Awards Programme targets young researchers at Member State level, women at regional level and open to all outstanding scientists at continental level . The programme is designed to celebrate the achievements of African scientists and to promote all efforts to transform scientific research into entrepreneurship, attract investments to Africa, and create research centers of excellence. It will further encourage the science community, and the public to participate in scientific engagements towards addressing critical problems in Africa.

The programme will contribute towards raising the profile of science and technology sector and building a scientific culture amongst African citizens.

A prize will be awarded to each of the following two scientific sectors (a) Life and Earth Sciences1; and (b) Basic Science, Technology and Innovation within the categories of the Awards
