2009 Emerald/ALCS African Engineering Research Fund Award.

Emerald and ALCS (The Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society), in association with INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) and the African Engineering Education Association (AEEA), are pleased to announce the launch of the 2009 Emerald/ALCS African Engineering Research Fund Award.

The Award-winning entry will receive a cash prize of 2,500 GBP (approximately US$4,000 equivalent) to fund the winning research project. Applications should focus on the subject of material sciences, and should also address the dissemination of knowledge for the social good with a specific orientation toward benefit for Africa.

At least one member of the research team must be based in Africa. The closing date for receipt of applications is 1 February 2010 .

This award represents a fantastic opportunity for researchers to gain significant financial support as well as international recognition.

German Egyptian Scientific Projects GESP - Mobility Grant program for German Egyptian research teams

The German Egyptian Scientific Projects GESP is a new fund that supports the exchange of scientific visits between Egyptian and German research teams.

This program is co-financed by the Science & Technology Development Fund (STDF) in Egypt and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Germany.

German-Egyptian Research Short term Scholarship (GERSS)

The German Egyptian Research Short term Scholarship GERSS is a program jointly funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and the German Academic Exchange Service, Bonn (DAAD) in order to finance short-term scholarships for young Egyptian scientists to travel to Germany.

The target groups of the program are researchers enrolled in MSc, PhD programs and young Post Doctoral candidates. The scholarships may be awarded for a period from three to six months.

African Union Scientific Awards

Training Course: Capacity Building in Environmental Related Issues in the Field of Geo-mining: Remote Sensing and other Environment-related Issues

TWAS - the academy of sciences for the developing world and FORGEA International - Training and cooperation centre in the field of geo-mining and environment are pleased to announce about a training course on Capacity Building in Environmental Related Issues in the Field of Geo-mining:Remote Sensing and other Environment-related Issues held 17-30 May 2009.

The course will focus on the many topics including:

- Mine site characterization as a prerequisite for remediation;
- Remote sensing techniques applied to satellite and aerial hyper spectral data for land degradation monitoring;
- Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic tomography imaging for characterizing deposits;
- GPS and photogrammetry techniques in quarrying areas;
- Environmental restoration of mining area surfaces;
- 3D modeling: visibility analyses, volume measurements, relief images.

The course will consist of lectures, group-learning activities, computer exercises, field work and case study reports provided by the participants. The course will arrange some 20 didactic modules and visits to relevant sites.

TWAS Fellowships 2009

The International Programme for Higher Education and Research (IPHER) provides over 280 fellowships annually tenable in developing countries such as Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Pakistan for scientists from developing countries.

COMSTECH-TWAS: Joint Research Grants Programme for Young Scientists in OIC Countries

The COMSTECH-TWAS Joint Research Grants Programme is established in response to the needs of promising young researchers in OIC countries, particularly those attached to institutions that lack appropriate research facilities.

Under this scheme, individual researchers in OIC countries working in science and technology are awarded grants to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity.

The specific aims of the programme are to encourage the pursuit of scientific excellence in OIC countries by identifying and supporting the best young scientists in these countries; to reinforce and promote scientific research and to strengthen the endogenous capacity in science and technology; to counteract the brain drain and reduce the exodus of scientific talent from the OIC countries.

King Faisal Foundation believes that it is through the collective efforts of outstanding individuals that the highest aspirations are realized. The annual presentation of King Faisal International Prize enables the Foundation to reward dedicated men and women whose contributions make a positive difference: those who exceptionally serve Islam and Muslims, and the scientists and scholars whose research results in significant advances in specific areas that benefit humanity. This incentive also encourages expanded research that may lead to important medical and scientific breakthroughs.

Merit and excellence alone are the criteria for selection. As testimony to the high caliber of Prize recipients and to the importance of the research carried out by KFIP laureates, nine winners have gone on to win Nobel prizes for the same works that were recognized by King Faisal International Prize. Incredibly, four of the six Physics and Chemistry Nobel Laureates for 2001 were former KFIP winners.

The Royal Society Pfizer Award 2009

This prestigious international award, sponsored by Pfizer Ltd, is designed to reward scientists at an early stage of their research career and to promote capacity building in the developing world.

The 2009 award is open to any research scientist, based in Africa, making an innovative contribution to the biological sciences, including basic medical science that has led to a sustainable positive impact on Africa.

Up to 60,000 will be awarded as a grant in order for the recipient to carry out a research project that is linked to an African centre of scientific excellence, which would normally be a University, or equivalent research centre. 5,000 will be given as a prize to the recipient.

Nominations can be made by senior academics and members of National Academies of Science. Nominations consist of statements from the nominator outlining the candidates scientific record, suitability for the award and impact in Africa, and a proposal by the nominee for the research project on which to spend the grant.

7^th Edition of the Islamic Development Bank Prizes for Science & Technology

In recognition of the crucial role that Science and Technology (S&T) plays in socio-economic development, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has, over the years, diversified and increased its assistance to member countries in this area.

In a move aimed at promoting scientific talents and excellence in the S&T education in R&D institutions of its member countries, the IDB launched in 1422H an initiative called the "IDB Prizes for Science & Technology".
