EU Funding Opportunities: Fellowships

European Commission has announced the Open call for proposal for the Individual Fellowship Scheme of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) under . Horizon 2020 Programme

This action is meant to support individual researchers from anywhere in the world. Mobility across borders is a must and Cross-sectoral mobility is also encouraged.

Experienced researchers (Researchers with doctoral degree or at least four years� full-time research experience by the time of the call deadline) can apply based on an application prepared jointly by the researcher and host organisation in an academic or non-academic sector.

All Individual Fellowships are expected to strengthen the contact network of both the researcher and the host organisation(s), to support the development of researcher�s career and to enhance and maximize their contribution to the knowledge-based economy and society. This grant supports an allowance to cover living, travel and family costs of the Fellow - as illustrated in the table hereinafter - and also the research costs and overheads of the host organisation(s) (usually a university, research center or a company in Europe).

Call for nominations for the 2016 TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize

TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) - for the advancement of science in developing countries, in partnership with Lenovo, the Chinese multinational computer hardware and electronics company, is inviting nominations for the 2016 TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize.

The Prize, sponsored by Lenovo, has been established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made by scientists living and working in the developing countries.

In 2016 the prize will be given for outstanding achievements in Chemical Sciences.

The Prize carries a monetary award of USD100,000 provided by Lenovo, as well as a medal and a certificate highlighting the recipient's major contributions. The prize will be presented at a special ceremony arranged by TWAS.

The deadline for receiving nominations is 16 May 2016.

GERSS - GERMAN EGYPTIAN RESEARCH SHORT TERM SCHOLARSHIPS

The German Egyptian Research Short term Scholarship GERSS is a program jointly funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and the German Academic Exchange Service, Bonn (DAAD) in order to finance short term scholarships for young Egyptian scientists in Germany. The target group of the program are researchers enrolled in MSc, PhD programs and young Post-Doctoral candidates. The scholarships may be awarded for a period from three to six months.

The scholarship shall enable advanced graduate students and young scientists to pursue part of their master's, doctoral or post-doctoral research in a specific research project at German universities, archives, libraries or research institutes. Henceforth, the GERSS program has changed from bi-annual to an annual system. The next call for application is expected on 1st of November 2016 and the deadline on 15th of February 2017.

2016 Call for applications for the OWSD Postgraduate Fellowships

Each year the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) offers talented women scientists from developing countries the opportunity to study for a PhD in a science subject at an excellent research institute in a developing country.

Candidates can choose between the full-time option (3 years) at a host institute (not in their home country), or the sandwich (part-time) option which allows them to enroll for a PhD in their home country and undertake a research visit of at least 6 months in a laboratory or institute abroad.

Funds are available for the period the student is at the host institute only. Costs covered can include travel to the host country, tuition fees, board, accommodation and living expenses.

Call for applications for AAAS-TWAS Summer Course on Science and Diplomacy

The call for applications for the AAAS-TWAS Course on Science and Diplomacy to be held in July 2016 in Trieste, Italy is now open.

The course is organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and TWAS, aims to expose participants to some key concepts on the interactions between the scientific and policy-making communities. It will also explore contemporary international policy issues relating to science, technology, environment and health.

The AAAS-TWAS Course on Science and Diplomacy will be held from 11 to 16 July 2016 in Trieste, Italy. The link below provides further information and access to the application form:

TWAS 2016 Prize in Social Sciences

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries is seeking nominations for the TWAS 2016 Prize in Social Sciences.

The TWAS Prizes are awarded yearly to individual scientists from developing countries in recognition of an outstanding contribution to scientific knowledge in a field of science of the Academy and/or to the application of science and technology to sustainable development.

The outstanding contribution may be defined in relation to existing opportunities and realistic possibilities available to the candidate. This applies particularly to candidates from scientifically disadvantaged countries.

The TWAS 2016 Prizes will awarded in the following nine fields of sciences:
Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematics, Medical Sciences, Physics and Social Sciences.

Each prize carries a monetary award of US$ 15,000 and a plaque.

Candidates for the TWAS Prizes must be individual scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years immediately prior to their nomination.
Members of TWAS and candidates for TWAS membership are not eligible for TWAS Prizes.

Call for Applications

The MESPOM Consortium of six universities - Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), Central European University (Hungary), the University of the Aegean (Greece), the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (USA), and the University of Saskatchewan (Canada) - invites applications for the Masters course in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management (MESPOM) for 2016-2018.

The two-year Masters programme enables students and early career environmental professionals to respond to complex environmental challenges, especially in an international context. The programme offers interdisciplinary modules delivered by experts of environmental science, policy and management. This includes courses such as 'Sustainable Energy Systems and Transitions', 'The Water, Food and Energy Nexus' and 'Energy Policy, Environment and Management', which provide students with an in-depth understanding of global energy issues.

The deadlines for applications are February 4, 2016 (for individuals applying for financial aid) and May 3, 2016 (for self-financing applicants).

Call for Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP)

The call for the second round of the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) is open.

The ASLP aims to train fellows in advanced leadership skills, connecting and empowering them to lead a new paradigm for African science. The inaugural programme exceeded all our expectations and we look forward to build on this success and network.

DIES Training Course "Management of Internationalisation"

Call for Applications 2016 -2017

Leibniz Universität Hannover, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) are jointly organising the DIES Training Course "MANAGEMENT OF INTERNATIONALISATION" in cooperation with Universidad de Guanajuato - UG (Guanajuato, México), Manipal University - MU (Manipal, India), and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology - JKUAT (Nairobi, Kenya).

The training course is part of the DIES programme (Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies), which has been jointly coordinated by the DAAD and the HRK (German Rectors' Conference) since 2001.
The key objective of the training course is to qualify university staff (either International Office staff or higher education managers responsible for coordinating international activities) from selected countries of Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia, to manage processes and tasks of internationalisation in the area of higher education. The programme will enable the participants to build up improved and more effective structures of internationalisation at their home universities.

Participants' Profile

  • At least 2 years of experience in the area of Higher Education Management: either as international office staff or higher education managers responsible for coordinating international activities.
  • Not older than 50 years of age.
  • Active and excellent English language skills (speaking and writing) are indispensable.
  • Commitment to attend all workshops and to develop an individual PAP, commit to a project report every 2 months.
  • Minimum technical equipment that guarantees the participation in the e-learning phases: internet connection and, if possible IT support for video conferences.

Application and Selection Procedure
The application must include the following:
  • Application form (s. Appendix 1)
  • Short profile of the university (s. Appendix 2)
  • Motivation statement by the candidate, indicating individual and institutional goals of participation (s. Appendix 3)
  • Letter of support from the top management of the university (President/Rector or Vice-Chancellor/Vice-Rector of the university), indicating relevance of participation in the programme under the internationalisation development or strategy of the university and his/her financial support (s. "Expected co-funding")
  • Organisational chart of the university (depicting the section where the candidate is working in)
  • Proof of English proficiency: minimum B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference or equivalent (TOEFL score 80, IELTS Band 6.5). Studies in English are also proof of proficiency. Phone interviews will be organized with short listed candidates to guarantee the requested proficiency in English.

TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme: 2015 call for applications

The UNESCO-TWAS Associateship Scheme enables competent researchers from the developing countries to visit participating centres of excellence in the South for research collaboration. An associate is appointed for three years during which he/she can visit a selected centre twice for 2-3 months each time. Almost 300 centres participate in the scheme.

TWAS provides travel support for the associates and a contribution towards subsistence costs up to USD300 per month while living expenses are covered by the host centres.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree. Special consideration is given to scientists from isolated institutions in developing countries. Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

GE-SEED - German Egyptian Mobility Program for Scientific Exchange and Excellence Development

The German Egyptian Mobility Program for Scientific Exchange and Excellence Development GE-SEED (formerly known as GESP) is a fund that supports the exchange of scientific visits between Egyptian and German research teams, with special emphasis on young scientists (Master and PhD students) and within the framework of a jointly submitted research project of a period up to two years.

This program is co-financed by the Science and Technology Development Fund in Egypt (STDF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Germany.

DIES ProGRANT Proposal Writing for Research Projects: Practical-oriented trainings for New Researchers

The aim of DIES ProGRANT is to train researchers and young PhD holders in developing a promising research proposal for national or international research funding (every participant will have the opportunity to tailor their application to the funding institution of their choice). Researchers from all disciplines can apply for this course. Each group will consist of 30 participants from the region. Because of its multicultural nature, DIES ProGRANT is also an effective tool for promoting international research and relationships.

Potential participants are researchers and PhD-holders from Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Sudan
Selection criteria are that participants:

  • Must hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent research experience
  • Have an affiliation to an academic institution in the above mentioned countries
  • Possess excellent English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Be preferably at the beginning or middle stages of their research career.
30 participants will be selected according to the quality of their exposé and also based on regional and institutional profiles. Applicants will be given a final decision by mid November 2015.

The costs for this training course will be mainly covered by funds of the DAAD (travel expenses, accommodation and meals, course expenses). Participants and/or their home institutions are expected to cover local transportation in their home countries (for example: taxi to airport), visa costs (if applicable), health insurance and possible additional per diems for the stay in Egypt.

Call for SUEZ initiatives Award offered by Institut de France

Call for papers: Special Issue on Technologies for Food Utilization in Humanitarian Contexts and Rural Areas

Within the Project Set4Food (www.set4food.org), Politecnico di Milano has launched a call for a special issue concerning energy technologies for food utilization in humanitarian contexts and rural areas.

The aim of the special issue is to extend and promote the knowledge about the application of suitable technological solutions in humanitarian emergencies, able to reach food security (with particular focus on the pillar of food utilization) starting from the local conditions and needs.

The contributions can concern both the state-of-art and empirical researches, particularly focused to the application in case studies, and have to be referred to humanitarian contexts and/or rural/periurban areas, dealing with the following main topics:
- food cooking;
- food preservation;
- electric power systems.
