Trieste NEXT Festival (28 - 30 September 2012)
27 May 2012
TWAS has been invited to participate in an international science festival called Trieste NEXT, from 28 to 30 September 2012.
This festival will be focused on "FOOD", and will involve all the major scientific institutes from Trieste, in the effort to deliver a message about the importance of research for food security, sustainable development and well-being.
For this reason, among other initiatives, we are now collecting exotic (for Italy) recipes from all the countries where TWAS operates.
Ideally, the recipes we would like to receive should be fairly simple to prepare, and speak of the local country where they come from.
Each recipe should carry:
Name of the recipe (Title):
Ingredients (How many servings?);
Instructions on how to prepare it;
Name and affiliation of the TWAS Member, Young Affiliate, Affiliate Alumnus, or recipient of TWAS prize, fellowship, grant, etc.
The recipes will be collected in a booklet, and presented at the Trieste NEXT festival. They will also be shared online with all the TWAS community.
Please, send your recipes to Ms C. Serra, Public Information Office:
cserra@twas.org
Deadline for submitting the recipes is:
15 July 2012.

2012 TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences
08 January 2012
2012 TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences
With funding from the Brazilian government for four years, the annual prize will carry a USD15,000 cash award.
The prize reflects the Brazilian government's strong support for TWAS and, more generally, for helping to build scientific capacity in the developing world. Such support has been reflected in the efforts of the former Presidents of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso (TWAS Fellow 1984) and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and the former Ministers of Science and Technology Jose Israel Vargas (TWAS Fellow 1988) and Sergio Rezende (TWAS Fellow 2004) President Cardoso and Minister Vargas played central roles in the creation of the TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences.
The TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize is named after the renowned Brazilian economist, Celso Monteiro Furtado (1920-2004).
Furtado's research focused on the plight of the poor in Brazil and throughout South America. He emphasized the importance of devising economic development policies that focused on building a strong industrial base for what he often referred to as "peripheral economics". He also foresaw the rise of the globalized world, which he said would be spurred by the "the spread of the world economy", and he urged developing countries to take steps to ensure that they would not be marginalized in the face of the these trends.
The TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize is accompanied by a medal.
Prizes are usually presented on a special occasion, often coinciding with the General Meeting of TWAS.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Candidates for the TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences must be scientists who have been working and living in a developing country for at least ten years immediately prior to their nomination.
- Candidates for the TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences must meet the following criterion:
To have made an outstanding contribution in both understanding and addressing social sciences disciplines such as economics, political sciences and sociology.
- Members of TWAS and candidates for TWAS membership are not eligible for the prize.
- Self nominations will not be considered.
NOMINATIONS:
- TWAS is inviting nominations from all its members as well as science academies, national research councils, universities and scientific Institutions in developing and developed countries.
- Nominations should be made on the relevant nomination form (which is attached to the announcement and could also be found through this link: www.twas.org > Programmes > Prizes).
The nomination must clearly state the single contribution the candidate has made to the development of social sciences, and should be accompanied by the nominee's CV and complete list of publications.
- Nominations of women social scientists are practically encouraged.
- Nominations for the 2012 prize must be received by the TWAS Secretariat no later than 29 February 2012.
Please find 2012 TWAS-Celso Furtado Prize-Nomination Form attached.

National TEMPUS Office-Egypt: Opportunities for universities and university students/staff under European Union programmes
18 December 2011
As part of its commitment to the countries of the Southern Mediterranean, the European Union is increasing its support for universities and students from the region.
Because student and staff exchanges and partnerships are essential for mutual understanding, exchange of ideas and knowledge, democratisation processes, professional development and employability, the European Commission has decided to significantly increase the funding allocated to the two programmes Erasmus Mundus and Tempus, allowing for the creation of more partnerships and increasing the number of scholarships for students and staff coming from North Africa and the Middle East.
