Many
workplace hazards are complex in nature, notably those relating to chemical and biological
agents. Industry ownership is important as employers have domain knowledge of the industry
and its associated hazards. Increasingly, health and safety protection requires a systems
approach, beyond looking at machines and processes. Our
regulatory framework promotes self-regulation by industries. This self-regulatory regime
includes features, such as safety management systems, safety personnel, safety committees
and safety audits. The onus is on employers to ensure that they have in place, and
continue to maintain systems to address safety and health issues at the workplace. |
