Rural people used
condoms less consistently. This may be related to supply and access
problems, and there is evidence of this in a number of rural communities.
The South African Health Review 2000 shows high levels of availability of
condoms in all provinces (fixed clinic waiting rooms, 87%; rural clinics,
85%). However, in some communities there are problems related to lack of
confidential, non-judgemental access to condoms. This is an important factor
that considerably limits condom access by young people. Also, contrary to
the above review, there are many rural areas of the country where condoms
are unavailable. It seems wise to think that the actual condom use
rates are indeed much lower than estimated.
