The total number
of deaths associated with tobacco smoking is represented by the sum of
smoking attributable deaths, SAMk , due to different
causes of death k. SAMk were calculated as SAMk = DEATHSk*SAFk , where DEATHSk is the number of deaths due to cause k, SAFk is the smoking-attributable fraction defined as SAFk = [E0 + E1*RR1(k) + E2*RR2(k) - 1]/[E0 + E1*RR1(k) + E2*RR2(k)], where E0, E1, and E2 are the proportions of, respectively, never smokers, current smokers, and former smokers. RR1(k) and RR2(k) are the relative risks of death due to the cause k among current smokers and former smokers, respectively. Smoking attributable years of potential life lost is defined as SAYLLk = SAMk*YPLL65k , where YPLL65k - years of potential life lost per one death due to cause k, defined as the average difference between 65 years and age of death. |
