Although not the first study to suggest an association between smoking and lung cancer, this 1950 case-control study performed with his mentor Sir Austin Bradford Hill. This table demonstrates highly significant association between smoking and lung cancer. “The simplest comparison that can be made to show whether there is any association at all between smoking and carcinoma of the lung is that between the proportion of lung carcinoma patients who have been smokers in the comparable group of subjects without carcinoma of the lung. Such a comparison is shown in Table IV.”
