For those who develop the disease, diabetes can damage nearly every organ system and is the leading cause of kidney failure, adult-onset blindness, lower limb amputations, and cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke.  Diabetes can also lead to liver disease, impaired wound healing and skin ulcers, periodontal disease, depression, pregnancy-related complications, and urologic complications.
