The hypothesis we tested
for the WHO DiaMond Molecular Epidemiology was that geographic
differences in T1D incidence reflect population variation in the
frequencies of T1D susceptibility genes.
In other words, we hypothesized that one reason that the
rates of T1D were so high in Finland was because more Finnish
individuals carried DQA1 and DQB1 susceptibility alleles.
Alternatively, we hypothesized that the rates of T1D in
Mexico were low because the frequencies of the DQA1 and DQB1
susceptibility alleles were low in that population.
