Dr van Beek had his medical training at Erasmus University Medical School, Rotterdam. After his MD, he went to the UK and worked in a variety of surgical specialities. After he returned to Amsterdam, he quickly changed careers and did his PhD on the Epidemiology and diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. Subsequently, he trained as a resident Radiologist. After this period, he obtained his current position at the University of Sheffield.
