The main problem arose with the fact that substantial numbers of patients with a low or very low probability did in fact suffer from a PE. The worrying problem was that clinicians did not realise this at first. Since, it has been suggested in many guidelines to divide the lung scan results into 3 categories: normal, high probability and non-diagnostic.
