This shows the
percentage of population in each quintile that was born outside of Canada. From 1971 to 1996, that percentage diminished in the richest quintile, but increased in the poorer quintiles. By 1996, over a third of the population of the poorest quintile was foreign-born, compared to about a quarter of the population in 1971. This is important because the mortality of immigrants, especially recent immigrants, is known to be lower than that of the Canadian-born population. |
