Survival is adequate as a basic summary of
disease expression. In particular, it is a very important standardized indicator of sickle
cell severity for comparison with other diseases. But long-survival does not mean a life
of low morbidity. and so survival can only hint at the burden of sickle cell disease on
the patient. The use of clinical endpoints and patient centered information is likely to
give a more sensitive account of severity.
