Iron supplemetation is another strategy in order to prevent or treat IDA.
Inversely to what was outlined for food fortification, this strategy:
It does not reach all segments of the population
Does require the cooperation of the individuals
Does require a health system delivery
It implies higher cost
The absorption is influenced by the dose, Iron stores, whether it is taken between meals or with other supplements.
Different authors have analyzed the effectiveness of weekly versus daily iron supplementation . They showed that weekly iron supplementation presented higher compliance, lower side effects and a similar effect on improving iron status. But there is still no general agreement about the effectiveness of this disification.
