This virus is separate from but related to CDV.
Pathogenesis, immunity and epidemiology:
Highly infectious virus is excreted in nasal and ocular exudates and in saliva and faeces. Aerosol virus travels over distances of less than 3 metres.
Marked necrosis of gut (zebra bands) and resp tract, lymphadenitis, death after haemorrhagic diarrhoea. Cattle will only recover from less virulent infections.
Diagnosis:
Antigen can be detected in lymph nodes or small intestine by AGDP within 2 hours. Virus isolation can be made on calf kidney monolayers. PCR at IAH, Pirbright using degraded material from India where cows cannot be slaughtered (The pm's in India can be done by untrained personnel and so getting the right tissue, eg haemorrhagic mesenteric lymph node full of virus, can be unlikely).
