Although the exact mechanism is not known, researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease. Oral bacteria may attach to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries and contribute to clot formation and inflammation caused by periodontal disease. The inflammation caused by periodontal disease may increase plaque build up. |
