Arrangement and Direction of Writing
Hieroglyphic inscriptions were organized into registers of vertical columns or horizontal lines. Signs were written from right to left, and from left to right. The signs were placed in a continuous sequence, without any punctuation marks, or word spacing. Reading is according to the direction of the sign; if signs are directed towards the left, then the reading starts from left to right. If signs are directed towards the right, then the reading starts from right to left.
