Mac Callum classified viral hepatitis into two
types: 1) Viral hepatitis A (infectious hepatitis), and 2) Viral hepatitis
B (serum hepatitis). Blumberg discovered Australia antigen (HBsAg) in
aborigines in 1965. Dane discovered complete HBV particle (Dane
particle) in 1970 followed by discovery of HBeAg by Magnius in 1972. In
1973, Feinstone and Purcell identified HAV. Rizzetto described delta
antigen (HDV) in 1977. Balayan proved HEV in 1983 from the specimen
obtained during 1955~1956 massive epidemic of water-borne hepatitis in
Delhi, India. After years of silence, Chiron group cloned and identified
HCV in 1988. In 1995 and 1996, Abbott group and Genelab group reported
discovery of GBV-C and HGV respectively, and were proved to be the same
virus. |
