Chronic
hepatitis is caused by virus, drug, and autoimmune causes. It is
characterized by varying degree of hepatocellular necrosis and
inflammation, and requires a time factor of at least six months duration
including both clinical and laboratory features.
First classification is made in 1968 and the proposed classification
was aimed at distinguishing subgroups according to the degree of disease
activity. The revised classification was made in 1994, and the diagnosis
is primarily based on its etiology.
