During my research fellowship, I was asked to use geographic information systems (GIS) to determine which areas within my state had unusually long driving distances to obtain breast cancer services. I have used this technique in a grant for the National Cancer Institute. In addition to access to breast cancer care, this methodology can address questions of access to medical care and planning the placement of new medical facilities.
