Preeclampsia is a common complication of pregnancy, is
associated with hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance, and is a predictor of future
essential hypertension. Among young Colorado women, the risk of preeclampsia decreased
with increasing gestational age in a dose-dependent fashion. Also, women born in the
lowest weight category (under 4.5 lbs) were at greatest risk for preeclampsia (OR.= 5.2;
95% CI = 1.2-21.5) relative to women born at 8.5 lbs or more. However, in contrast to the
Norwegian gestational diabetes data, there was no trend by birth weight categories.
