Nondiabetic obese women (n=14) were placed on a very low calorie diet (mean energy intake 3.9 ± 0.1 MJ/d [941 ± 27 kcal/d], 20% from fat) for 21 days. BMI was reduced by a mean of 2.1 kg/m2, and adipose tissue mass was reduced by a mean of 3 kg. Serum IL-6 concentration was significantly reduced by 17%, but the 32% reduction in CRP was not statistically significant (p=0.14). Tumor necrosis factor " (TNF-") concentration was not changed.
