More specifically,
once a lipophilic chemical is inside the human body, it will not go away any
time soon. In some instances, a large enough dose can induce an acute
adverse effect such as a birth defect, or can activate the initiation of a
cancer’s development if the chemical acts as an initiator. Thus
certain damage can be induced with doses received simply from a short
exposure duration. The point being made here is that the ADI or RfD used for
tolerance derivation did not seem to take into consideration the possibly
significant extra amount of a POC arising from sources other than fish
consumption. Meantime, all the toxicity studies conducted thus far could not
afford the testing of synergistic or additive adverse effects of these
chemicals. |
